BP Handle B-5 – Scalpel Handle No. 7
The B Martin BP Handle B-5 is the No. 7 — the long, slender, pen-shaped scalpel handle favoured by cardiovascular, plastic, hand, and deep-cavity surgeons. Where the flat No. 3 and No. 4 are built for palm grip and bulk-blade work, the No. 7 is built for fine pen-grip precision at depth. Its narrow, tapering body keeps the surgeon’s hand clear of the operative field so the blade tip can work in confined spaces with full visibility.
The B-5 is machined in surgical-grade stainless steel with a fine satin finish. The characteristic No. 7 profile — long, cylindrical in the mid-shaft, tapering towards the blade end — delivers the balance and tactile feedback that precision surgery demands. The blade-fitting end uses the standard No. 3 slip-lock, so the No. 7 accepts the same small blades as the No. 3 and 3L: #10, #10A, #11, #12, #12D, #13, #14, #15, #15A, #15C and #16. The #11 (pointed) and #15 (curved fine) blades are especially common on this handle. The slim pen-grip shape is what makes it indispensable in cardiac, vascular, plastic, hand, and microsurgical work, as well as in ophthalmic approach incisions and deep oral surgery.
